Description
The author/illustrator offers a graphic novel documenting the life of her great-uncle, Sompong. The author, Elisa, is a young girl when she travels with her family to Bangkok in 1985, and meets her great-uncle. The two bond over a dish of papaya salad, and Elisa learns about her great-uncle's childhood, education, and arrival in Europe on a military scholarship when World War II began. He tells her about his life during the war, how he met his wife Lek, and how they survived the war and returned to Thailand. After the meal, Elisa and her great-uncle prepare a dish of papaya salad and offer it to their ancestors.
