In 1951, the Truman administration established the Federal Civil Defense Administration (FCDA), to assist American households with preparing for survival in the event of a nuclear attack. In the mid-1950s, the FCDA began distributing literature to Americans outlining the importance of protecting their families from nuclear fallout. Fallout shelters became a popular addition to American homes.
