The Apollo program was undertaken by the National Aeronautics and Science Administration (NASA) in order to fulfill President John F. Kennedy's pledge to put a human being on the moon by the end of the 1960s. After the first lunar landing of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, NASA launched several additional lunar expeditions. Apollo 13 was the third such expedition, but it never reached the Moon because of a malfunction onboard the spacecraft.
