Description
Uncovers the origins, development, workings, and influence of America's hidden caste system by exploring three parallel systems--slavery in the American South, Nazi Germany, and the caste system in India. Features real-life examples of how the caste system has affected people's lives from slave plantations and lynchings to the mistreatment of African Americans by the government today. Also discusses the effects of the caste hierarchy on health, politics, and culture today and suggests ways America move away from a social hierarchy toward unity, such as creating a group similar to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Draws on the works of experts, the author's own experiences, and portraits of African American pioneers through history.
