Divides grasslands into temperate and tropical grasslands with drought and floods being the main problems in these areas. Observes that floods and fires are natural cycles that preserve, rather than destroy, grasslands. Plants and animals have developed survival patterns adapted to a short growing period. Explains that herbivores dominate this biotic community but the biomass of small animals such as insects outweighs that of herbivores. Grassland evironments are credited with giving our ancestors predictable supplies of food that made the Arts possible. Lichens and algae are essential to the preservation of grasslands.
