Description
Two tiger cub brothers are seized from their jungle home and taken to Rome. The larger, stronger cub is trained as a fierce killer of gladiators and Christians at the Colosseum. The younger, smaller cub becomes a special gift from the emperor Caesar to his beautiful daughter, Aurelia. This cub's fangs are removed, and his claws are covered with leather pouches. Aurelia is delighted by the cub and calls him Boots. Julius, a handsome young animal keeper, shows Aurelia how to treat the great cat so that he will trust her. Boots becomes plump and is pampered by his mistress, while his older brother, known as Brute, lives in a cold, dark, bad-smelling place, receiving just enough food to be kept fit before he is let out to kill. The emperor Caesar enjoys seeing his fearless daughter play with her prized pet. He trusts Julius to watch over Aurelia and Boots. But Aurelia and her sly cousin Marcus play a prank and hide Boots. When the tiger escapes, someone must pay with his life. Caesar believes Julius has betrayed his trust and plans for him and Boots to be killed in the Colosseum. When the dreaded day arrives, Aurelia and thousands watch as Julius is sent unarmed into the arena to be torn to pieces by Brute. In Tiger, Tiger, the masterly storyteller Lynne Reid Banks offers a breathtaking view of ancient Rome, its tragedies, and its triumphs. Book jacket.
