Description
Under the leadership of Captain Henry Wirz, during the last year of the Civil War more than twelve thousand of the thirty-three thousand Union (Northern) soldiers imprisoned at Andersonville died. Most perished as a result of exposure to sun and rain, insufficient food, and horrible unsanitary conditions, but cruel treatment was also a factor in many of the deaths. After the war ended, Henry Wirz was tried by a specially-appointed military court, for having been at least partially, and in many cases fully and directly, responsible for these deaths. In a case that has left a lasting impact on our country, he was sentenced to death for his part in the horrors at Andersonville Prison.
