Description
This fiercely comic tale stands in markednbsp;nbsp;contrast to its genial predecessor, The Pickwicknbsp;nbsp;Papers . Set against London's seedy backnbsp;nbsp;street slums, Oliver Twist isnbsp;nbsp;the saga of a workhouse orphan captured and thrustnbsp;nbsp;into a thieves' den, where some of Dickens's mostnbsp;nbsp;depraved villains preside: the incorrigiblenbsp;nbsp;Artful Dodger, the murderous bully Sikes, and thenbsp;nbsp;terrible Fagin, that treacherous ringleader whosenbsp;nbsp;grinning knavery threatens to send them all to thenbsp;nbsp;"ghostly gallows." Yet at the heart of thisnbsp;nbsp;drama is the orphan Oliver, whose unsulliednbsp;nbsp;goodness leads him at last to salvation. In 1838 thenbsp;nbsp;publication of Oliver Twist firmly established thenbsp;nbsp;literary eminence of young Dickens. It was, nbsp;nbsp;according to Edgar Johnson, "a clarion pealnbsp;nbsp;announcing to the world that in Charles Dickens thenbsp;nbsp;rejected and forgotten and misused of the world had anbsp;nbsp;champion."
