After a deadly outbreak of cholera wipes out his fishing camp, twelve-year-old Leif is instructed to head north by a dying elder. Leif follows the Scandinavian coastline in a cedar canoe packed with limited supplies. Though Leif is unsure about where he is going and must survive hardships such as bears and dangerous tidal pools, he learns to appreciate the possibilities of carving out a life of his own.
