In medieval Europe, Dame Margery Kempe, a holy woman who experiences the agony of the Virgin Mary, tasks her servant, Johanna, with accompanying her on a pilgrimage to Rome. As Johanna slaves about all day, tending to and feeding the entire pilgrimage party, she grows impatient and exhausted. When a feud breaks out among the pilgrims, Kempe abandons Johanna. Alone in a foreign land and unable to speak the language, Johanna commences her own journey to Rome.
