The year is 1812 and New York State is deeply involved in the war. When 15-year-old Jessica's mother falls ill and returns to Grandmother Brock's home in Albany, Jessica is left to be the woman of the house. On a bitter Christmas Eve, Jessica goes out to the barn to check on her newborn kittens, only to find a shaken and disturbed young man hiding there. Along with her father and brother, Jessica tries but cannot get a word out of the young man. After time, they nickname the young man Daniel and let him live and work on their farm. He is quiet and withdrawn but he helps out with all of the chores. When Daniel is accused of theft, Jessica begins to wonder if Daniel's dark eyes hide a dangerous truth. Now she must discover the secrets beneath Daniel's silence, before she loses her special friendship along with everything else her family has ever worked for.

The War of 1812 is an event seldom written about in middle grade books. Filled with evocative detail about farm and family life in New York State during the early 19th century, this unusual novel brings new dimension to the immensely popular genre of historical fiction.
